She was born on August 18, 1959, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Nirmala Sitharaman spent her childhood in various parts of the state due to her father’s transferable job in the Indian Railways.
She completed her schooling in Chennai and Trichy. She completed her BA in Economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Trichy. Nirmala did her MA and M Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi.
At this same university, she enrolled for P.hD. and was unable to complete it due to her husband going to England where she accompanied him.

Career
Nirmala Sitharaman started her career in the United Kingdom, initially working as an assistant to an economist in the Agricultural Engineers Association.
Later, she joined the Research department of PricewaterhouseCoopers in London as a Senior Manager. Her expertise also led her to work at the BBC World Service.
In 1991, Sitharaman returned to India and became the Deputy Director of the Centre for Public Policy Studies in Hyderabad.
Joining the BJP in 2008, Sitharaman swiftly climbed the political ladder. In 2014, she assumed the role of Commerce Minister with independent charge in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet.
Her impressive leadership and dedication led to her promotion to the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs.
On September 3, 2017, Sitharaman made history by becoming the first full-time woman Defense Minister of India, succeeding Arun Jaitley.
